How To Develop A Web Site In Seven Easy Steps

Step one: Choose your domain name.

The first and often over looked step in developing a web site is the domain name. Picking out a domain name can be tricky but the most important things are for it to be easy to remember and related to the web site. For example, if your web site is about selling roses then you will want a domain name that is consistent with the site's content. www.RosesForSale.com would be a good domain name for example. Thousands of domain names are registered each day so once you think of a good domain name think of at least three alternatives in case your first choice for a domain name is already taken.

Step two: Register your domain name.

Once you have a domain name that you would like to use you will need to: 1) see if it is available, 2) purchase it and 3) register that domain name with a domain name registrar. A domain name registrar is a company that, for a small fee, will list your domain name and credit you as the owner. They will also connect your domain name to your web host's server (see step three). A common domain registrar is GoDaddy.com Go to your choice of domain name registrars and do a search for the domain names that you decided on. Once you find one that is available and suits your liking then just follow the on screen instructions to register that domain.

Step three: Purchase a hosting account.

Once you have registered your domain name you will need to purchase a hosting account for your actual web site. A web site host is a company that acts as a bridge to connect your domain to the Internet. They offer a variety of services and tools that you can use to develop your web site. Step Four: Choose a web page editor.

Now that you have your registered domain name and your web site hosting account, it is time to create your first web page. Now a web page must be written in a certain code so that your internet browser can understand it. There are many types of code. The most common code is called Hyper Text Markup Language or HTML for short. Fortunately we don't need to know this particular code. Many popular software companies offer software that allow you to create a web page visually by adding pictures and text just as you would in a word processor. An example of a popular web page editor is Microsoft Front Page. If you don't have access to Microsoft Front Page simply do a search on the internet for a free web page editor.

Step Five: The rest of the site.

Before you start creating your first page you must know how many pages you would like and what to say on each page. The minimum pages for any web site is three. The first page should be your “index” page. This is the page that a visitor sees first when he/she visits your site. This should have at least some basic information about your site and a general guide to the other pages. The second page should be an “about” page. This page contains information about you and your business/opportunity. The third page should be a “contact” page that contains information on how to contact you. Make sure you save these as .html files. So for example your index page should be saved as index.html

Step Six: Upload your pages.

Once you have created the pages for your site you must upload them to your web host so that they can be displayed on the Internet. This is called Publishing your site. Most hosting companies have software included called File Transfer Protocol or FTP for short. This is a fancy way of saying upload. Simply follow the instructions in your web host to upload your pages to your hosting account. You can also download free FTP software to run right from your computer.

Step Seven: Keep your Web Site updated.

Once your site is published it is live and can be visited by anyone around the world with access to the Internet. Be sure you keep your web site up to date and add new information if necessary.
